Exploring sustainable development in this industry is of practical value, as it involves the rational use of marine resources while protecting the environment. This study provides an innovative review of the current application status of Digital Twins Technology (DTT) in various sectors of the marine industry, including the ship-building industry (SBI), Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, marine fishery, and marine energy industry. The findings reveal that DTT offers robust support for full life cycle management (LCM) in SBI, including digital design, intelligent processing, operation, and error management. Furthermore, this work delves into the challenges and prospects of DTT application in the marine industry, aiming to provide reference and direction for intelligent systems in the industry and guide the rational development and utilization of marine resources in the future.

1. Introduction

The 21st century has witnessed an unprecedented economic boom, and within it the marine economy has grown remarkably, providing humanity with diverse resources such as food, minerals, shipping, and water [1, 2]. Yet this growth has created new challenges in the marine economic sector, including over-fishing, while urbanization and industrialization have intensified pollution and limited the carrying capacity of marine waters, threatening the self-regulation abilities of the marine ecological environment — sparking social problems and regional conflicts over marine resources [3]. There is therefore an urgent practical need to strengthen marine environmental protection while exploring and utilizing marine resources.

The use of advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), deep learning, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding beyond traditional sectors into the marine industry. Ashraf (2021) [4] highlighted that IoT sensors positively impact the intelligent advancement of smart-city services, and among these technologies Digital Twins Technology (DTT) stands out as digital mapping systems for critical, interconnected entities, widely adopted in product design, manufacturing, medical analysis, construction, and engineering [5, 6]. DTT transfers real-world physical information to virtual models for simulation, analysis, data accumulation, mining, and e-application, so the digital model enhances physical-system performance [7].

Under rapid marine-economy development, we discuss the current situation, challenges, and prospects of DTT in the marine industry toward rational exploitation of marine resources and environmental protection. This comprehensive review offers a novel perspective on DTT and its applications across the ship-building industry, full life cycle management, the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry, marine fisheries, and the emerging marine energy business. Section 2 introduces DTT's theoretical foundations and reviews its deployment across industries, Section 3 examines its current application state in the marine industry, Section 4 summarizes research challenges and presents the outlook, and Section 5 presents the findings [25–27].

2. Overview of Digital Twins Theory

The Digital Twins concept was initially formulated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration following Grieves' proposal during a product PLM training exercise at the University of Michigan in 2003: comprehensive use of physical models, sensor updates, and historical operational data to integrate multi-disciplinary, multi-physical, multi-scale, multi-probabilistic simulation processes, creating a virtual representation of the physical world. The technology can map the entire life cycle of specific physical equipment. Sahal et al. (2022) [8] used blockchain with Digital Twins to build a decentralized epidemic-tracking and alarm system, and demonstrated (2021) [9] DTT's error-identification and diagnosis capabilities by automatically detecting unstable operational data in manufacturing systems.

DTT was first used mainly for predicting aircraft service life, then expanded into logistics, urban public health, oil and gas transportation, autonomous vehicles, intelligent finance, intelligent medicine, manufacturing, education, and medical care [10–19]. Table 1 in the original paper summarizes DTT application fields with their technologies/algorithms, roles, and achievements, showing DTT has become a general reference architecture for digital transformation across sectors.

DTT's essence is the closed loop between the physical entity and its digital twin: real-time data collection via sensors, virtual-model updating, simulation and prediction, then feedback of recommendations to the physical system for performance improvement. DTT intersects with IoT, AI, cloud computing, and big data, which provide the data-collection and processing infrastructure underpinning twin accuracy and freshness.

3. Application Status of Digital Twins in the Marine Industry

The marine economy is a multi-faceted realm encompassing the exploitation, utilization, and conservation of marine resources and spaces, giving rise to ocean industries such as marine fisheries, salt production, offshore oil and gas, marine transportation, coastal mining, shipping, and coastal tourism [25–27]. This section examines the current state of DTT applications across these sectors.

3.1. Application Status of DTT in SBI and Full LCM

In SBI, assembly, design, processing, and manufacturing stages are crucial for safe, efficient navigation, while accurate early warnings and prompt equipment maintenance are essential for efficient ship-equipment utilization and overall LCM optimization [28, 29]. DTT has made significant strides across the full equipment life cycle in SBI, supporting digital design, intelligent processing, smart operation, fault prediction, and equipment maintenance.

3.1.1. Application Status of DTT in the Product Design Stage of SBI

Design is the first step in ship production and has grown complex with advanced ship equipment and platforms; traditional design methods often struggle with new requirements such as lengthy design cycles and high final-application costs [30]. Researchers have shown DTT's effectiveness in intelligent ship design: Arrichiello and Gualeni et al. (2020) [31] argue it offers a comprehensive view of the cruise system with SBI potential, and Xiao et al. (2022) [32] proposed a vertical–horizontal design framework integrating multi-disciplinary modeling to shorten cycles and cut costs.

3.1.2. Application Status of DTT in Ship-Building Manufacturing

Conventional shipbuilding relies on a manufacturing execution system collecting real-time production data and monitoring progress, quality, and workload — yet exception handling often needs manual supervision and reconfiguration, reducing efficiency especially where high processing accuracy is required, as in steam turbine units where a minor defect can scrap an entire part [35, 36]. With DTT, physical-space data are mapped to virtual space for real-time monitoring and adaptive control of welding, assembly, and forming, cutting rework rates and improving quality consistency across production lines.

3.1.3. Application Status of Digital Twins in Ship Operation

Ship operation is fraught with challenges from the unpredictable marine environment, complex operating-system technologies, and the need for efficient crew coordination — large vessels coordinate multiple navigation and maneuvering systems without unified digital control [51]. Introducing DTT into operation and navigation systems can greatly enhance safety and reliability via real-time overall-status monitoring and history-based fault prediction, and academia has contributed studies on intelligent routing, energy management, and twin-based route optimization.

3.1.4. Application Status of DTT in Ship Inspection and Maintenance

In ship operations, fault detection and maintenance are pivotal. Regular routine maintenance keeps ships at optimal performance. DTT has revolutionized fault simulation and prediction, enabling real-time structural-health monitoring, key maintenance-point identification, and proactive fault prediction and repair. Upon failure, crews can analyze its impact on the virtual twin and devise maintenance plans from reliable data [64, 65]; scholars have studied DTT for marine-engine diagnostics, hull structures, and propulsion systems.

3.2. Application Status of DTT in the OOGI

Recent years have seen substantial DTT growth in the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry — exploration, exploitation, transportation, and processing of offshore oil and gas — playing a crucial role in its digital transformation [75]. Wanasinghe et al. (2020) [12] showed their Digital Twins framework positively impacted OOGI productivity, operational efficiency, and safety, reducing capital/operating cost variability, health and environmental risks, and projected asset life cycles. DTT has also been applied to fatigue-crack-growth prediction in offshore platforms [Fang et al. 2022], subsea-pipeline monitoring, and asset-integrity management.

Digital twins of offshore platforms fuse structural-sensor data, sea states, and load models to simulate structural response and predict failures before they occur, cutting emergency-intervention costs and extending asset life in harsh marine environments.

3.3. Application Status of Digital Twins in Marine Fisheries

Marine fishery resources — fish, crustaceans, shellfish — hold significant sustainable-development value, yet over-harvesting threatens them with recession and exhaustion [80, 81]. DTT has emerged as a crucial catch-prediction tool [82]: Lv et al. (2022) [83] proposed a distributed-hybrid Fish Swarm Optimization Algorithm (FSOA) based on underwater environments for fish-count estimation, while others built aquaculture digital twins monitoring water quality, fish growth, and survival rates, guiding fishing plans and production across a full life cycle: plan design, count surveys, growth monitoring, and production management.

These applications support sustainable fishing by aligning fishing effort with scientific stock estimates, helping prevent overfishing, protect marine ecosystems, and maximize economic returns for coastal communities.

3.4. Application Status of DTT in the Marine Emerging Energy Industry

Thanks to growing DTT use, the emerging marine high-tech industry is advancing toward comprehensive development, with science-technology integration accelerating traditional-industry transformation and marine-economy growth [88]. Experts have explored DTT in emerging marine energy: Liu et al. (2021) [89] proposed a maritime-transport Digital Twins system adding relay nodes to the data path — a relay-cooperative IoT network whose simulations showed energy-accumulation capability for efficiency gains. DTT has also been applied to offshore wind farms for turbine-performance monitoring, maintenance prediction, and layout optimization, and to wave/tidal energy for device simulation and resource exploitation across a full life cycle: probe, exploit, transport, and sale.

These applications accelerate offshore-renewable deployment by de-risking investment and improving energy yield, supporting carbon-neutrality goals and the global energy transition.

4. Research Challenges and Prospects of DTT in the Marine Industry

4.1. Research Challenges of DTT in the Marine Industry

Managing the marine industry's full life cycle with DTT is a comprehensive, long-term endeavor, and reviewing practical examples is crucial. Wang et al. (2022) [93] used DTT as a predictive-maintenance model for electromechanical equipment, gathering physical/spatial sensor signals to model devices and developing a robust fault-diagnosis method whose experiments validated accuracy surpassing other methods — enabling remaining-life prediction and maintenance decision-making. Mourtzis et al. (2021) [94] presented similar smart-manufacturing frameworks. General challenges include: heterogeneous marine data and intermittent at-sea connectivity, missing unified modeling and data-exchange standards, high cost of high-fidelity twins, cybersecurity and data-privacy concerns, and model-validation difficulty in harsh marine environments.

Marine applications face specific challenges too: a highly dynamic, uncertain ocean environment; multi-scale temporal and spatial phenomena; integration of legacy ship/platform systems with modern digital architectures; and the need for multi-disciplinary expertise spanning marine engineering and data science.

4.2. Research Prospect of DTT in the Marine Industry

DTT is advancing rapidly, driven by new-generation information technology — fifth-generation mobile communications, cloud computing, big-data analytics, AI, wireless sensor networks, IoT — plus growing computing power and strong state-policy and enterprise-strategy support. Based on the current-status and challenge assessment, the following warrant further consideration: first, DTT offers a means of integrating multi-source data across the full life cycle; second, fusion with AI and edge computing will boost real-time prediction and control; third, open standards and interoperability will support wide deployment; fourth, applications will extend toward integrated ocean management and a sustainable blue economy, guiding rational marine-resource exploitation and environmental protection.

Ocean digital twins are expected to play a pivotal role in initiatives such as the UN Decade of Ocean Science, building comprehensive marine-system models that support evidence-based policymaking and adaptive resource management.

5. Conclusions

DTT is gaining momentum across industries, although still early-stage and requiring further research and refinement. This review focused on DTT in the marine industry toward the dual objectives of rational marine-resource exploitation and environmental protection. An innovative overview of current Digital Twins applications in ship-building, total life cycle monitoring, offshore oil, marine fisheries, and emerging marine energy was presented. DTT provides robust support for digital design, intelligent processing, smart operation, and fault warning and maintenance, facilitating full life cycle management in the marine sector.

Nevertheless, Digital Twins application challenges remain — from data integration and standards to cost and security — while prospects look promising with new-generation technologies and institutional support. May this review serve as a reference for intelligent development and sustainable exploitation of marine resources using Digital Twins.
