Due to the weak signal power and the publicly known structure of civil signals, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) face an increasingly severe threat from spoofing interference. Constrained by inherent limitations such as physical boundaries and the inability of self-validation, single-source detection methods struggle to effectively counter complex spoofing attacks. Consequently, the advantages of multi-source fusion detection have become increasingly prominent. By incorporating heterogeneous sensors such as Inertial Navigation System (INS), vision, and communication signals, multi-source fusion technology leverages independent reference sources for cross-validation, providing an effective approach to overcome the bottlenecks of single-source detection. This paper systematically reviews 67 representative publications in the field of multi-source fusion GNSS spoofing detection from 2021 to 2026. Existing methods are categorized into three main classes: filtering algorithm-based detection, multi-source data consistency-based detection, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based detection. The advantages and limitations of each category are systematically compared, and the current research status along with future development trends are summarized.
GNSSs have deeply integrated into the operational framework of modern society, serving as the core reference for transportation, power and energy, communication networks, and military equipment to acquire high-precision Position, Velocity, and Time (PVT) information. However, the weak signals caused by high satellite orbit altitudes and the openly known structure of civil signals render these systems inherently open and physically vulnerable to interference, with spoofing interference posing a particularly severe threat: it broadcasts forged signals closely resembling authentic satellite signals, covertly inducing the receiver to produce erroneous PVT results and seizing navigation control without the user's awareness, which can lead to catastrophic consequences.
Mainstream single-source spoofing detection methods fall into four categories: the first relies on spatial geometric features such as multi-antenna array Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation; the second relies on radio frequency (RF)/baseband physical characteristics such as signal strength monitoring (power, Automatic Gain Control, carrier-to-noise ratio) and Signal Quality Monitoring (SQM); the third relies on navigation message and code-layer authentication such as Galileo OSNMA and BeiDou Signal Authentication; and the fourth relies on internal measurement redundancy monitoring such as Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring (RAIM) and internal crystal-oscillator clock-consistency monitoring.
These methods suffer from two clear constraints: the physical-limits constraint, whereby sophisticated, precisely synchronized generative spoofing can faithfully mimic the physical attributes of authentic signals through power matching, nanosecond-level code-phase alignment, and distributed collaborative array attacks, so that the sensitivity of DOA, SQM, and power monitoring degrades significantly or fails entirely; and the self-validation constraint, whereby single-source systems lack external independent reference benchmarks, cannot identify logically consistent false observation data, struggle against meaconing attacks, and — under collaborative spoofing of all visible satellites — see the RAIM algorithm fail, unable to distinguish the cause of the time-pulling effect. Multi-source fusion detection technology, possessing independent reference sources, effectively circumvents these single-source limitations by introducing non-satellite information such as INS, Visual Odometry, LiDAR, and land-based radio with cross-validation of heterogeneous data.
This study defines the publication window of the selected literature as 2021 to 2026, using English databases (IEEE Xplore, Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink) and the Chinese CNKI database with nine cross-combined search terms plus synonym-expansion rules. The preliminary query retrieved 512 publications; Zotero-based deduplication removed 126 duplicates leaving 386; title-based screening excluded 198 off-topic papers leaving 188; full-text rescreening excluded 122 single-sensor papers, yielding 66 valid high-value papers — 38 explicitly specifying fusion in their titles and 28 confirmed as genuine fusion after content verification.
Previous detection reviews mostly build their classification frameworks on signal-processing chains and algorithm types, so multi-sensor fusion detection appears only sporadically as a brief supplementary subsection without systematic classification or in-depth technical analysis. This review contributes a focused and timely frontier scope (2021–2026), a novel tri-categorical classification framework (filtering, consistency checking, and AI-based), and an in-depth exploration of the AI branch with its three sub-branches, addressing the theoretical gaps in existing reviews regarding the integration of AI with multi-source heterogeneous data.
The first pathway, loosely coupled (LC) integration, compares GNSS navigation solutions against other sources through Kalman-filter residual statistics. It features a simple structure and low computational complexity, but suffers poor detection robustness in complex spoofing scenarios and low sensitivity to slowly varying spoofing that drags positioning results in small steps over long periods, evading mutation-based detectors. The second pathway, tightly coupled (TC) integration, feeds raw measurements (pseudorange and pseudorange rate) directly into the filtering engine, enabling earlier signal-layer anomaly detection and — combined with robust-estimation improvements — resistance to filter tracking effects, shorter detection delays, and channel-level identification and isolation of contaminated satellites.
The limitations of this class lie in its dependence on accurate system/measurement noise statistical models, and in improved algorithms raising computational complexity and complicating embedded deployment. Nevertheless, this pathway remains the most engineering-mature because it derives from the navigation computation system itself, and — through the short-term high-precision characteristics of autonomous sensors such as INS — provides the ability to detect covert slowly varying spoofing via long-term accumulated relative deviations, which single-source methods relying on instantaneous or short-term statistical features cannot achieve.
This class detaches from the filtering computation process and relies on direct mutual verification of multi-source observation information. At the inertial-unit (IMU/INS) level, the high autonomy, short-term precision, and strong anti-forgery capability of self-contained sensors detect spoofing through long-term accumulated deviation, but depend strongly on the motion state and are affected by sensor noise and vibration, raising false-alarm rates in complex environments. At the communication-signal level (5G networks, LEO satellites, vehicular networks), communication functions enable low-cost collaborative cluster cross-validation, but depend on communication-infrastructure deployment or cluster scale, and the communication links themselves may be interfered with or spoofed.
At the visual-information level (Visual Odometry, cameras, LiDAR), low-cost cameras widely mounted on UAV and autonomous-driving platforms are unaffected by the GNSS radio-signal environment, but are strongly affected by environmental factors such as lighting, weather, and scene texture. Applied studies show this class achieves a good practical balance: IMU-based detection suits highly maneuvering platforms, communication-based collaborative verification suits vehicle fleets and intelligent infrastructure, while visual fusion suits GNSS-denied navigation provided favorable visibility conditions hold.
The core value of this class is that it reduces reliance on the inherent features of spoofing signals by introducing physical-level heterogeneous redundancy, possessing stronger generalization capability and scenario adaptability than single-source algorithms designed for specific spoofing patterns whose performance collapses when spoofing features deviate from design assumptions (such as high synchronization between spoofing and authentic signals, or simultaneous multi-satellite spoofing). It further provides an independent positioning reference when GNSS is fully spoofed, and achieves rapid spoofing identification and contaminated-observation isolation through multi-source cross-validation — a key means of enhancing overall system resilience for UAVs, autonomous driving, and critical infrastructure.
This class discards manually defined decision rules and employs intelligent algorithms to mine data features for anomaly identification across three branches. The first branch is prediction-based comparison, where models such as LSTM and GRU predict the nominal trajectory from historical navigation data and compare predictions against GNSS outputs: it needs no precise physical models, mines temporal features, and can provide short-term navigation under GNSS denial, but depends on high-quality nominal training data, accumulates prediction errors over time, and mostly inherits thresholds from traditional statistical methods. The second branch is classification-based recognition, where models such as XGBoost, Random Forests, MLP, Transformers, and CNNs deliver fast end-to-end decisions with flexible feature engineering fusing heterogeneous information — achieving 97.644% mean accuracy for XGBoost on the AV-GPS dataset and 99.99% accuracy for the DARTS method — but depend heavily on hard-to-obtain labeled spoofing samples and suffer weak cross-scenario generalization, overfitting risk, and poor interpretability.
The third branch is unsupervised anomaly detection (Isolation Forest, autoencoders with multi-head attention, TimesNet, LSTM-based self-supervised frameworks): it needs no labeled spoofing samples and adapts well to unknown attack patterns, achieving 100% detection at 0.57% false-alarm rate for the attention-augmented autoencoder, 99.57% accuracy for TimesNet, and 85.8–99.3% AUC for LSTM-VAE variants, but depends on high-quality nominal training data and suffers poor interpretability. Together with prediction-based comparison, this branch is the fastest-growing direction because it addresses the two hardest practical dilemmas: the scarcity of real labeled spoofing samples, and the need to generalize to unseen attacks never observed during design.
The current status can be summarized as follows: filtering-algorithm detection is the most engineering-mature, data-consistency detection is the most deployment-practical for UAVs, vehicles, and ships, and AI-based detection is the fastest-growing but least mature for embedded deployment due to model complexity and data dependence. Future trends include: deepening physical-level heterogeneous redundancy, fusion with signal-layer authentication (OSNMA and BeiDou authentication), building labeled real-attack open multi-sensor datasets (in the spirit of AV-GPS, Marine Cadastre, and Apollo), developing lightweight embeddable models, and improving generalization toward unknown, slowly varying, and collaborative multi-source spoofing.
In conclusion, multi-source fusion — by possessing independent reference sources and cross-validating heterogeneous data — effectively overcomes the two dilemmas of single-source detection (physical limits and the absence of self-validation) and provides an effective path through the blind spots of single-source detection. Filtering-based detection offers engineering robustness, consistency checking offers field practicality, and AI offers generalization capability; the future of the field lies in resilient defense systems combining all three pathways rather than relying on any single one.
