لرسم خريطة الحالة الراهنة، بحث المؤلفون في Scopus بالاستعلام (testbed OR test bed) AND survey AND (ICS OR industrial control systems)، فحصلوا على سبع نتائج طابق اثنان منها [24،25] تركيز أتمتة العمليات؛ وأُضيفت ثلاثة مسوح أخرى [26،27،28] عبر المراجع وGoogle Scholar.
Abstract
In recent years, the Industry 4.0 paradigm has accelerated digitalization and slowly diminished the line between information technologies (IT) and operational technologies (OT), bringing convergence challenges including new attack vectors, threats, and security imperfections. Protecting industrial infrastructure therefore requires monitoring and detection systems trained on high-quality, large datasets collected under diverse conditions — yet revealing real factory setups is costly and restricted by privacy and sensitivity concerns.
From this lack of data emerges the topic of industrial testbeds: sub-real physical laboratory environments, virtual factories, honeynets, and honeypots that deliver datasets for research and development. This paper surveys related work on industrial testbeds, describes best practices and lessons learned from assembling physical, simulated, virtual, and hybrid testbeds, compares their essential parameters, and visualises the findings to reveal research and development challenges.
1. Introduction
The Industry 4.0 paradigm — industrial IoT, big data analytics, cloud computing, horizontal and vertical integration, robotics, augmented reality, additive manufacturing, and digital twins [1,2,3,4] — brings indisputable advantages but also major challenges, cybersecurity being crucial. Massive digitalization, IT/OT convergence, and growing interconnectivity make cybersecurity a central concern [5,6,7,8,9,10,11]. Sophisticated malware targeting control systems is hard to detect, especially zero-days and specialized rootkits, while standard IT software and hardware inside ICS networks introduce additional vulnerabilities.
The scale of the problem is visible in vulnerability statistics: only two ICS vulnerabilities were published in 1997, 19 in 2010, and 189 in 2015 [13]; Kaspersky detected 415 ICS vulnerabilities in 2018 and 509 in 2019 [12,14,15], while remote access in industry grew 53% during the pandemic, widening the attack surface. Real attacks confirm the stakes: the 2013 attack on a German steel mill disabled production with major damage [16], and the 2015 and 2016 attacks on the Ukrainian power grid cut electricity to a quarter of a million households each [17,18].
For these reasons, new intrusion detection schemes for ICS networks at both process-control and network-communication levels are needed, with machine learning currently the most promising direction [19,20,21,22,23]. But suitable datasets for learning, training, and testing are scarce, forcing researchers to build custom test environments. A testbed — a platform simulating real-world activities under supervision for replicable experiments — enables dataset generation, incident testing without economic impact on live plants, and real-time evaluation of detection methods. The contributions of this article are: a current survey of testbeds outside the power sector; a parameter summary of each testbed; documented experience with physical, simulated, virtual, and hybrid testbeds; and visualised parameter percentages defining further research challenges.
2. Related Work
To map the state of the art, the authors searched Scopus with (testbed OR test bed) AND survey AND (ICS OR industrial control systems), obtaining seven results, of which two [24,25] matched the process-automation focus; three further surveys [26,27,28] were added via references and Google Scholar. Holm et al. [24] (2015) compare research goals, component implementation (virtualization, emulation, simulation, hardware), and fidelity across scenarios such as vulnerability analysis, education, defence-mechanism tests, honeynets, and threat analysis — a good starting point for parameter selection despite its age.
Cintuglu et al. [26] (2016) compare smart-grid testbeds by research area, domains, platform type, protocols, and connectivity — methodologically useful but power-grid-centred. Qassim et al. [27] describe testbed approaches (physical, simulated, virtual, hybrid) and evaluate fidelity, repeatability, accuracy, safety, cost-effectiveness, reliability, and scalability per approach. Geng et al. [25] classify physical, software-simulation, semi-physical, and virtualized testbeds with eleven application scenarios, while Ani et al. [28] give a thorough fidelity-centred evaluation methodology focused on energy testbeds.
This survey differs by focusing exclusively on process automation (PLC-centred), deliberately omitting the well-covered energy sector; by comparing properties relevant to building datasets for ML-based intrusion detection; and by including cloud-service usage as a parameter, reflecting infrastructure-as-a-service trends in industrial networks [29]. The methodology and parameter definitions follow next.
3. Our Approach — Physical Testbeds
All testbeds were built in the university laboratory for data collection, spanning physical (pure industrial hardware), hybrid, virtual, and simulation categories. The industrial motor control testbed (Q1 2021) uses exclusively Siemens components — S7-1200 PLC, KTP700 HMI, Scalance XB005 switch, V90 drive, and Simotics servo motor (Table 3) — to capture proprietary S7/Profinet communication for which no public datasets exist. The scenario controls motor start/stop, speed, and rotation direction via HMI. Lesson learned: the build enabled a deep dive into S7 protocol analysis for anomaly-detection datasets; future work adds SCADA connectivity, TIA Portal v17 WinCC Unified HMI, and long-term interception with anomaly injection. Main limitation: single-purpose flexibility.
The wastewater treatment testbed replicates a real village sequencing batch reactor (SBR) plant, completed June 2021, to collect process data (pumps, level/sludge/rain sensors, blowers) and study attack vectors against remotely supervised treatment plants. Built around a Siemens S7-1200 PLC, KTP700 HMI, CSM1277 switch, binary pumps, and level sensors (Table 4), the whole process — start/stop, blower and pump states, tank states, full drain — is controllable via HMI. The complex physical design took extensive planning; operation is still being optimised for long-term dataset capture.
The brewery testbed (Siemens S7-300 PLC, KTP700 HMI, valves, relays, level/temperature/pressure sensors; Table 5) was designed after the previous builds, using TIA Portal v15.1 for programming/supervision and openMUC as the SCADA interface. Physical testbeds give the truest device behaviour and highest fidelity, at the cost of build time, expense, and inflexibility — each rig serves essentially one process.
4. Our Approach — Virtual, Simulation, and Hybrid Testbeds
The honeypot testbed runs entirely virtualized: HonSSH for SSH deception, MiniNet/MinicPS for network and industrial-system simulation, Docker isolation, Suricata for intrusion logging, Grafana monitoring, all on an Ubuntu VPS with a public IP (Table 6) exposing ModBus and Ethernet/IP. It captures real attacker behaviour passively and safely, feeds IDS datasets, and scales cheaply — though it lacks physical-process fidelity. The simulated brewery testbed (Raspberry Pi 3B+, Raspbian 10, pymodbus 2.5.2, openMUC SCADA over ModBusTCP; Table 7) and the simulated wastewater testbed (Raspberry Pi 3B+, CPPPO Modbus library, openMUC, touch LCD; Table 8) trade fidelity for flexibility, scalability, and near-zero cost, ideal for rapid scenario iteration.
The hybrid industrial production loop combines Dobot Magician robotic arms (3×), conveyor belt, sliding rail, colour sensor, Raspberry Pi 3B+ clients, and OpenMUC SCADA over ModBus-TCP/Ethernet-IP (Table 9) — real mechatronics driven by emulated control. A further nuclear power plant wastewater treatment simulation extends the approach to safety-critical processes. The summary comparison (Table 10) shows all seven in-house testbeds support data analysis, cybersecurity research, and education; only simulation/hybrid designs offer flexibility and scalability; none yet use cloud solutions.
All rigs converge on one SCADA layer: openMUC-based supervision (Section 3.6), giving a uniform data-collection and control interface across heterogeneous hardware. Key cross-cutting lessons: start from a single-vendor stack to master one proprietary protocol before expanding; budget most effort for physical builds; design the network capture (span ports, historians, engineering workstation taps) before the process logic; and prefer simulation for dataset volume, physical rigs for ground-truth fidelity.
5. Discussion, Results, and Open Research Challenges
Visualising the surveyed testbeds' parameters (Section 4) reveals structural gaps: historians, engineering workstations, and MTU/RTU diversity are rare; flexibility, adaptability, scalability, and extensibility concentrate in simulation/virtual designs; dedicated cybersecurity evaluation and cloud-solution support are nearly absent. In other words, the community can build high-fidelity single-process rigs or flexible low-fidelity simulations, but not yet testbeds that are simultaneously faithful, flexible, scalable, and cloud-connected.
From this emerge open challenges: standardised fidelity and evaluation metrics enabling cross-testbed dataset comparability; affordable modular hardware designs reusable across processes; realistic IT/OT convergence traffic (remote access, cloud links, IIoT gateways) inside testbeds; labelled attack datasets on proprietary protocols (S7, Profinet) with documented ground truth; and safe, repeatable procedures for executing destructive attack scenarios. Addressing these would turn isolated rigs into a shared, cumulative research infrastructure for ICS intrusion detection.
6. Conclusions
This paper surveyed the industrial testbed landscape outside the power sector, tabulated essential parameters of each testbed, and reported first-hand experience building physical (motor control, wastewater, brewery), virtual (honeypot), simulation (brewery, nuclear wastewater), and hybrid (production loop) testbeds — all operated in the university laboratory for dataset collection. The comparison shows physical rigs maximise fidelity while simulation and hybrid designs maximise flexibility and scalability, with openMUC providing a common SCADA supervision layer.
The visualised findings define concrete next steps: modular reusable designs, convergence traffic, proprietary-protocol datasets, cloud integration, and standardised evaluation. Testbeds, the authors conclude, are an indispensable component of ICS security research — for attack-technology studies, anomaly-detection datasets, and functional testing — and sharing their designs and data is the fastest route past the dataset scarcity blocking ML-based ICS defence.
